Ch-ch-ch-changes!

Goodbye

First, let me mourn the loss of Kalon as a blogger, author of the ThinkTank. Kalon did a great job of finding interesting aspects of the feral side of life and digging in deep to crack the mechanics of the bear druid. His work helped me gear on more than one occasion and I will sorely miss him and his analysis. However, he did leave us with some great resources to try and fill his shoes.

With every closed door, we find another just opening. As many of you might have been aware, there was a calling for a Balance/Resto druid over at WoW.com. They selected a voice in the community that is both well known and well received. Congratulations to Murmurs on his new position and we look forward to reading his posts!

Closer to Home

It is with much sadness that I now post that I am no longer a member of The Horde. I have recently transfered servers and factions in order to accept a part-time raiding spot on Dragonblight-US with the guild . I run my first raid with them tonight and I am salivating at the prospect of raiding competitively once more. To all the Horde I know an love, I shall miss you. To my new Alliance brethren, it's nice to be back where it all began, slumming around IF, jumping across the bridge in front of the AH.

I must say, Dalaran has gotten significantly more irritating as Alliance. I now am constantly ported out of my auto-pilot to portals, trips to the inn, and generally feel upside down in the city. Hell, I thought the south bank was like El Dorado, a place of mystery beyond the veil of time and space. And the north bank now feels as foreign as a car in England.

Patch 3.3 - Ups and Downs

Patch Notes:
Force of Nature: Health on the treants has been increased.

Avoidance (passive): Now reduces the damage your pets take from area-of-effect damage by 90%, but no longer applies to area-of-effect damage caused by other players.

Eclipse now increases damage done by Wrath by 40% (up from 30%) and the critical chance of Starfire by 40% (up from 30%)

Eclipse: This effect will not activate again within 15 seconds of either type of Eclipse effect firing, in addition to the existing 30-second cool-down for each type of Eclipse.

Druid T8 Balance 2P Bonus – Increases the bonus granted by Eclipse for Starfire and Wrath by 7%. (Down from 15%)

Druid T10 Balance 4P Bonus – Your critical strikes from Starfire and Wrath cause the target languish for an additional 7% of your spell’s damage over 4 sec. (Up from 5%)
So there's a nice buff to our treant survivability. The first Eclipse change breaks WiseEclipse so the community as a whole tends to view this as a nerf. The second Eclipse change is supposed to compensate for this "loss". Lastly the 4T10 bonus got buffed, which I feel is appropriate and brings it more in line with other set bonuses in strength.

The Eclipse changes have put the community in a bit of an uproar and so I decided that I would copy over Murmurs's work since he finished it before me (why reinvent the wheel?)
There has been a lot of whining lately over the changes that Balance Druids have seen. In this thread, I am going to present the math related to all of those concerns. I am doing this in a separate thread in order to keep the main post less cluttered and shorter. If you have questions concerning the validity of the math, please post them here and I will do my best to address them. If you have questions or comments about the general conclusion of the topic, then please post them in the other thread. I will do my best to monitor both.

2T9/T8 compared to 4T9.

It was requested that I do these comparisons based on actual gearing numbers and not based upon theoretical values that these gearing sets might have. I agree that this is an important factor, and so I went and built item sets for each one. Each set will use no item with a higher ilevel than 245 though some of which might be from ToGC 10. I did my best to find as optimal a gear set up for each one as a possibly could, but I won't say that they are exactly perfect. For instance, I know that both are slightly over the hit cap. I did try and switch one of the Hit items and gem for Hit instead, but I found that the overall loss of stats seen by doing this simply wasn't worth it. In general, the set would gain far less Haste than it would lose in Crit to do this while Spell Power would remain approximately unchanged. The professions I used were Enchanting and Inscription. They are arguably not the best, but all professions are approximately the same in value, and these are easy to configure. For gemming, I ignored socket bonuses if I felt they weren't an on-par gain, I only used 2 Purple gems for the Meta and choose the best socket bonus for doing so. I also chose to gem yellow sockets for SP/Crit, you could argue for SP/Haste, but that's a different topic really, and since both are pretty much the same in terms of yellow gems, it doesn't really matter.

Again, please note, I am not saying that these are BiS lists for these gear sets, you can argue different gearing set ups for lots of things, but these are really good ones.

Also note, WoWhead automatically calculates the gains from talents such as Improved Moonkin Form, so the only difference in stats from those talents is due to raid buffs which alter stats. I will also be using ToW values even those Demonic Pact is actually better, this is because it is a set value and not a theoretical one that could be different. Oh, and since Intellect does increase Crit values, I added in 1% Crit to adjust the values for raid buffs which increase Intellect, the actual value is just slightly over that, since the 0.XX% additional Crit won't effect scaling too much, I don't care to figure out the exact value.

Glyphs will be the standard Starfire, Moonfire, Insect Swarm.

Normally I would have ended the rotation after the last Wrathx6 to proc Eclipse since this should represent when the damage gained from Eclipse has balanced back to the standard average, but adding in the last two Starfires would allow for IS to fall off while Moonfire fell off just after the last Wrath cast. In total, the rotation has 2 Insect Swarms, 2 Moonfires, 12 Wraths, 11 Wraths(E), 3 Starfires, and 9 Starfires(E) and takes 52.1975 seconds to complete.

Although there are slight cast time differences between the two sets, none of them were significant enough to alter the rotation. In total the rotation has 2 Insect Swarms, 2 Moonfires, 12 Wraths, 11 Wraths(E), 3 Starfires, and 9 Starfires(E) and takes 52.3085 seconds to complete.

The Change to Eclipse

Eclipse has recently been buffed to 40% increases instead of 30%. Since we will now be using 4T9 without question due to the 2T8 nerf, here is how this change would impact the DPS of the above T9 rotation

Wrath (Eclipse):
(592 + (3505 * .671)) * 1.54 * 1.03 * 1.04 * (1 + ((.4566 * 1.09) * 1)) * 1.13 * 1.03 * 1.03 = 8719.3414

Starfire (Eclipse):
(1130 + (3505 * 1.2)) * 1.14 * 1.03 * 1.04 * (1 + ((.8866 * 1.09) * 1)) * 1.13 * 1.03 = 14913.4267

((3 / 1.114) / ((1 + (14.39 / 100))) / (1 + (.2 * (1 -(1-.8866)^2)) = 1.9660

The slight reduction in Starfire's cast time would reduce the total time of the rotation by 0.0756 seconds, not really significant, but it shouldn't have been expected to be, but still a slight change. This brings the total time down to 52.2329

(14 * 1484.65333) + (16 * 2429.75899) + (12 * 6454.5774) + (11 * 8719.3414) + (3 * 11606.7374) + (9 * 14913.4267) = 402070.027

402070.027 / 52.2329 = 7697.63936

7697.63936 - 7425.21531 = 272.42405

(272.42405 / 7425.21531) * 100 = 3.6689% gain
Now note, Graylo found that the loss of Wise Eclipse was a 2.6% to 3.1% DPS loss, so we see this buff offering ~ 1% DPS increase. Sounds nice to me. So soothe those ruffled feathers, strap on the 4T10 and get back to blasting!

As a side note, I think people should begin to accept the fact that Blizzard likes the Eclipse mechanic because it makes Balance play unique. This increase to the power of the Eclipse talent only makes it a more crucial part of the Moonkin build. As GC stated, they are not looking to encourage an Eclipse-less Balance spec. Also, don't look for any major overhauls between now and Cataclysm. Yes, I know this all seems major, but its really just a crutch to keep us viable for the current time.

Eclipse Proccing for Lunar Eclipse

Wouldn't this significantly increase the time it takes to proc a lunar eclipse?


Theoretically yes. Although theoretically this would allow you to use higher values of haste with wrath before GCD clipping. With 600 haste, a 2 second cast with Nature's Grace would become:
2.0 / ((1.2 * 1.05 * 1.03 * 1.03)(1 + (600 / 3297)) = 1.27 seconds

And throw in BL/Heroism you're looking at
2.0 / ((1.4 * 1.2 * 1.05 * 1.03 * 1.03)(1 + (600 / 3297)) = 0.94 second which would still trigger a 1 second global cooldown

That's faster than the possible GCD. And without NG under BL/Heroism:
2.0 / ((1.4 * 1.05 * 1.03 * 1.03)(1 + (600 / 3297)) = 1.08 second

@45% crit we're looking at
(1.00 * 0.6975) + (1.08 * (1 - 0.6975)) = 1.02 seconds for the average cast.

As you can see, we'd still be hitting the hard cap of the GCD during Nature's Grace. This means that despite the increase in cast time, increasing the proc rate on Eclipse would probably cause Lunar rotations to be easier to proc. (Although there would be a significant increase in Solar eclipse damage at higher values of haste, allowing that to scale as well so maybe that would be a balance). So to answer your question, not really. Especially considering most Lunar Boomkins run with higher haste anyway.

Solar Rotation Impact

As mentioned above, I was worried about what would happen to the damage of a Solar eclipse rotation once the cast time got bumped up and we could fire off wraths with larger benefits from haste. For the following calculations, I will assume that my raid buffed druid has 3000 spell power, 45% crit, and 600 haste. Yes, I realize this set may not exist, but it is entirely for demonstrative purposes.

Here are some numbers that I'm gonna be using throughout to calculate this.
Normal Wrath Damage: (658 * (3000 * 0.6714))*(1.13 * 1.04 * 1.03) = 3234.58
Critical Wrath Damage: (658 * (3000 * 0.6714))*(1.13 * 1.04 * 1.03)*(2.09) = 6760.27
Eclipse Normal Wrath: (658 * (3000 * 0.6714))*(1.13 * 1.04 * 1.03)*(1.30) = 4204.95
Eclipse Critical Wrath: (658 * (3000 * 0.6714))*(1.13 * 1.04 * 1.03)*(1.30)*(2.90) = 8788.36
Normal Wrath Cast Time: 1.5 /((1.05 * 1.03 * 1.03)(1 + (600 / 3297))) = 1.14
Normal NG Wrath Cast Time: 1.5 /((1.2 * 1.05 * 1.03 * 1.03)(1 + (600 / 3297))) = 0.95 which we round to 1 since the GCD is 1.
Avg Wrath Cast Time: (1 * 0.6975) + (1.14 * (1 - 0.6975)) = 1.04
Glyphed Wrath Damage: (658 * (3000 * 0.6714))*(1.13 * 1.04 * 1.03)*(1.35) = 4366.68
Glyphed Crit Wrath Damage: (658 * (3000 * 0.6714))*(1.13 * 1.04 * 1.03)*(1.35)*(2.09) = 9126.36
Glyphed Eclipse Wrath: (658 * (3000 * 0.6714))*(1.13 * 1.04 * 1.03)*(1.35)*(1.30) = 5676.68

Avg Glyphed Wrath Cast Time: (1.27 * 0.6975) + (1.52 * (1 - 0.6975)) = 1.35
Now on to the actual details. I am just focusing on the 30 seconds of the fight that we are either in Eclipse or on an Eclipse cooldown. Given the increased cast time, I'm going to assume that Solar rotations are now filling the cooldown time with Wrath spam. For sake of comparison, I will assume that we manage to predict when Starfire was going to crit and did not waste a cast in Eclipse on Starfire. We open by refreshing IS. Then we refresh IS and MF after the Eclipse proc expires.

Normal Wrath Eclipse
Wrath Casts under eclipse effect: 13.96 / 1.04 = 13.42 which we shall down up to 13 since the 14th cast ends while no longer under the eclipse effects.

Average Wrath DPC Under Eclipse: (4024.95 * (1 - 0.45)) + (8788.36 * 0.45) = 6168.49
Avg Wrath Damage Under Eclipse: 6168.49 * 13 = 80190.37

That leaves 30 - (1.04 * 13 + 1.04) = 15.44 seconds of Eclipse cooldown. In that 15.44 seconds we will refresh IS and MF taking a total of 2.08 seconds, leaving 13.36 seconds left to cast wrath spells. Thus we have 13.36 / 1.04 = 12.85 casts which we must round down to 12 in order to avoid accidentally proccing the wrong Eclipse type.

Avg Wrath DPC: (3234.58 * (1 - 0.45)) + (6760.27 * 0.45) = 4821.14
Avg Wrath Damage: 12 * 4821.14 = 57853.68

Total Wrath Damage For Normal Eclipse Cycle: 57853.68 + 80190.37 = 138044.05
Total Wrath DPS For Normal Eclipse Cycle: 138044.05/30 = 4601.47
Glyphed Wrath Eclipse
Wrath Casts under eclipse effect: 13.96 / 1.35 = 10.34 which we shall round down to 10 since the 11th cast finishes while no longer under the eclipse effects.

Avg Glyphed Wrath DPC Under Eclipse: (5676.68 * (1 - 0.45)) + (11864.29 * 0.45) = 8461.10
Avg Glyphed Wrath Damage Under Eclipse: 8461.10 * 10 = 84611

That leaves 30 - (1.35 * 10 + 1.04) = 15.46 seconds of Eclipse cooldown. In that 15.46 seconds we will refresh IS and MF taking a total of 2.08 seconds, leaving 13.38 seconds left to cast wrath spells. Thus we have 13.38 / 1.35 = 9.91 casts which we must round down to 9 in order to avoid accidentally proccing the wrong Eclipse type.

Avg Glyphed Wrath DPC: (4366.68 * (1 - 0.45)) + (9126.36 * 0.45) = 6508.54
Avg Glyphed Wrath Damage: 9 * 6508.54 = 58576.86

Total Wrath Damage For Glyphed Eclipse Cycle: 58576.86 + 84611 = 143187.86
Total Wrath DPS For Glyphed Eclipse Cycle: 143187.86/30 = 4772.93

TL:DR


So it seems to me that the glyphed version of the solar eclipse cycle would allow for an increase of 4772.93 - 4601.47 = 171.46 DPS which is clearly a nice increase. This "extra" dps came from the glyphs ability to allow wrath to scale with haste. This allows the solar rotation to continue to scale with stats just as well as the lunar rotation does, where currently the lunar rotation begins to scale better after 400 haste when wrath casts begin to clip the GCD.

A side note, since editing: The DPS of the glyphed Wrath cycle suffered by essentially one wrath cast in the eclipse cooldown portion. I had .91 of a cast which is easy to imagine that with a good RNG (or even decent RNG) you would garner that cast instead of switching to avoid proccing the wrong eclipse.

Oh Mumurs. I just talked and mathed myself into this as a fix for just about everything excluding our movement issue! How elegant and easy of a solution! Introduce ONE minor glyph that doesn't change the DPS of Wrath and solve a large chunk of our concerns! Well played sir. You have my vote in 2012!

Reworking Eclipse

So with yet another tip of my horns to Murmurs, I'm gonna take a look at eclipse, the RNG, and some of the proposed changes. The original discussion can be found here.

Current Eclipse


The current eclipse mechanism is very RNG dependent. For a lunar cycle, there is a 60% chance that a critical strike Wrath will proc eclipse. Right there are two instances of RNG. Even a solar cycle, which is 100% chance on a Starfire crit, still requires an RNG dependent event.

It is very easy to appear anti-RNG when talking about Eclipse and its current mechanics. Let me be clear that I am NOT anti-RNG. I think that one of the only ways to prove skill within WoW is to show how you react to dynamic situations and RNG dependent buffs/debuffs provide an excellent way to separate the great from the good.

Now that we have that little soapbox behind us, let's continue looking at eclipse. A 30% increase in critical strike chance to Starfire spells or a 30% increase to Wrath damage is the net result of the proc. Now assuming that Starfire and Wrath were doing comparable DPS, then 30% crit ~ 30% damage (with the point going to crit if the RNG loves you or increased damage if the RNG doesn't). So what is wrong with eclipse?

Eclipse provides 15 seconds of this bonus. In a "Stand and Deliver" fashion, this is pretty solid, but it breaks down in high movement situations because the buff doesn't stop ticking down just because we aren't casting. It's not unusual to spam away and once eclipse procs be forced to move in some manner.

So gandering, yes sir, gandering at Murmurs post on the WoW forums, we have the following recommendations:
- Every Starfire you cast has a 20% cumulative chance of making your next Wrath do 30% more damage. So after SF1, the chance is 20%, but after SF5 the chance is 100%.
-Allows for a higher opportunity to benefit from Eclipse procs
-Still completely RNG based and does not promote any true form of skill

Mathematically speaking, this eclipse would be centered around finding the highest probable DPS without doing a 5xStarfire>5xWrath and repeat ad nauseum. This becomes a very standard rotation and I can see the SquawkHard showing a big starfire picture with a number inside of it to count the number of Starfires cast. My brain begins to freeze over a little bit and a small puddle of drool collects around my keyboard as I raid and continually count from 1 to 5 and occasionally refresh my DoTs.

- Every Starfire cast increases Crit chance by 1%, every Wrath cast increase Haste by 1%. Both effects stack and have a duration of 10 to 15 seconds.
-Very simplistic and removes all concept of RNG and gives a flat, predictable bonus instead
-Does not create a very interesting or skilled rotation. Only one 'off choice' spell needs to be cast every 10 to 15 seconds.

This idea turns eclipse from a proc into a ramping DPS talent. First you lay on your haste effect and then you lay on your crit effect and you cast your spell of choice (likely Starfire since you'll reap both a haste benefit and a crit benefit while wrath might do some GCD clipping) with one of the other spell every 8 or so seconds to refresh your stack. I agree that the idea is a solid and dependable solution to the perceived RNG problem but it removes all need for skill. Thus is another place where an addon like SquawkHard would rule your rotation. I find this to be vastly different than the feral druid priority that requires keeping up buffs and debuffs that all have different cooldowns/requirements. Their rotation is a balancing act and the good players are easily separated from the bad players. I think a change of this style would only create a plateau of Balance druids.

The only hope that I see for this change is making it impossible to maintain both stacks completely thereby forcing people to choose between running sub optimal stacks or picking one stack over the other.

- Change Eclipse to be based on 'charges' instead of a timed debuff allotting a specific number of casts to be effected by the proc.
-Increases the opportunity to benefit from Eclipse
-Does little to remove the major RNG factor of Eclipse, though it does lessen it -Removes Haste scaling from Eclipse
-Would still have to have some form of time limit to prevent 'chaining' Eclipse or buffing pre-fight

Believe it or not, I really like the idea because it gives the player control. Gone would be the days of a movement wrecked Eclipse proc. It also preserves the unpredictability of the moonkin rotation. I agree with the thought that there needs to be a time limit on this buff and that it should be in excess of the time needed to cast the spell. There is always the option of starting the cooldown when the buff is either used up or expires. This will encourage druids to use it immediately but not penalize them for having to succumb to fight mechanics.

- Change Wrath's portion of Eclipse to be 100% chance on Crit instead of 60%.
-Removes the larger portion of Eclipse's RNG
-Still does little to help with mobility to making use of Eclipse

I hate to be the naysayer here, but the reason that the Wrath chance is 60% is because a Wrath cast time is less than a Starfire cast time. Now, ignoring the first cast proc, this means that you would have more chances to crit with Wrath than you would with Starfire. This would tip the scales back in the direction of the Lunar cycle and you'd see every Moonkin doing exactly the same thing. Blizzard has made it clear that they don't want to encourage this type of blind dopplegangering within a class/spec.

- Change Eclipse to be two separate 'on use' abilities that share a 30 second cooldown with each other
-Removes the concept of 'spell twisting'
-Allows for the best use of Eclipse buffs

So while this provides the most "user control" it again eliminates any randomness from the druid rotation. In fact, we become uni-dimensional. Pick your spell and subsequent DoT(s). Cast said spell repeatedly. Pop eclipse when most approriate. Replace keyboard from having hit 3 or 4 so many times that they no longer work.

-Change Eclipse to work like Arcane Blast and/or Missle Barage.

Ok, this is backed by Foofy (if I'm reading that correctly). Before I do a review of this I am going to need to see a little more information on it.

- Change Eclipse to add a stackable buff to Starfire and Wrath - such as each Wrath Crit increases Starfire's chance to Crit by X%. The effects don't have a shared cooldown, thus the two are theoretically chained together
- Allows for better use of Eclipse procs
- Less RNG dependent
- Promotes spell twisting
- Has the possibility to be abused in un-intended ways (although I don't think this is a major concern)

Ok, so this was my baby and I'm pretty biased to it, but lets just pretend I'm not and that I am taking as objective a stance as I can. I suggested this adaptation because it still contains the RNG factor based on your crit. It would be 100% on crit for application and in this case, you needn't worry that wrath casts faster than starfire because you'll want to have both buffs rolling. Here's the catch: You may not be able to do that all the time. In terms of gearing, I feel that this also encourages the best balance of crit/haste because you will be using both spells copiously. I agree with the un-intended abuse as it might be possible to stack crit high enough to run both buffs all the time. I feel that doing so would cause you to sacrifice so many other stats that even with both buffs rolling, your dps would be sub-par.

In the end, I feel like we've had some good ideas thrown forth by the community and I hope that GC continues reading past the silly banter people feel the need to throw into constructive threads.
